that moment

when you know you bonded with your grandchild

He still looks like a lot of newborn babies so I'll post his picture. When he starts becoming more distinct looking, I'll stop.

The young family have been coming over pretty much every weekend since we moved down here for dinner Sunday nights. A few weeks ago daughter in law went back to work and it created a gap in their schedules on Saturday when son had to be at work and daughter in law was still working so I offered to cover that gap (a few hours).

We're getting to know each other, little one and me. I'm recognizing his cries, attention versus hungry versus tired.

This past Saturday afternoon I put him in his swing for a bit and I was cooing and smiling, he was cooing and smiling back and it hit me "we have bonded." He is comfortable in my arms, I am comfortable with him in my arms.

I knew we didn't have to be down here at the moment of his birth, but I knew for us to have a close relationship we needed to be down here by the time he was three or four months old. We moved when he was 6 weeks old; he recently turned 3 months old a few days ago.

I never thought I would be a grandparent. I know some people look forward eagerly to that day. I know a couple that was at the baby's shower that every other word to their adult daughter was basically "when are you going to have a child so we can be grandparents."

I never "pressured" son to have a child. In fact I went the other way. He would have friends that had children and I would say "you still have plenty of time." I figured it would happen after he was 30 years old. He turned 27 in March.

I am sorry that there are those that want to be grandparents and things turned out differently than they expected or they are still waiting for that day. I hope that day does happen down the road.

Its an incredible type of joy.

I started praying for him after I knew he was on his way and before I knew he was a "he". I prayed for a healthy baby, a safe delivery. Now for his health and also that he would come to know Jesus as a young one and be used mightily for God and his kingdom. In the Bible, John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth. That was my prayer too. Not sure if it was answered, but it was prayed.

He is healthy. He is doing things at an advanced age. He is loved. He is well cared for.

I started telling him about Jesus the other day. It is my intent to continue to do so all the days I am able to do so.

Jesus loves all the little children.

Jesus loves this little guy.

Just like I love this little guy.....

but he loves him so much more

if that is even imaginable

but it is.......

He's gorgeous, Betty, and it's lovely that you now live close enough to see him regularly. Grandma & grandson is such a special relationship.

I am glad you have bonded with your grandson. I remember when I first got married even my doctor was asking me when I was going to get pregnant. Got pretty fed up with it.

Oh, how precious. I've never felt a great urge to be a grandma, but recently, I've started thinking about it. My oldest has been married 1.5 years and she has started mentioning, "when I get pregnant." Lord willing!

You are a wonderful grandma, Betty! That is fantastic that you are a regular part of his life and praying for his future.

He's adorable. And you are right about bonding. I've found that when they start to 'mimic' you is when they are trying to have a conversation. That just seems so cool to me.

I wish him every happiness. He's certainly getting off to a good start. :)

I'm so glad you have the opportunity to spend time with your little grandson. It makes such a difference. Most of mine live far away but the ones that live close by have been a blessing. I was able to spend a lot of time with 3 of them from birth on due to the fact that I retired from work. They were tiny little ones then and won't remember that but I will always be thankful.

Great that you can live close and have a bond indeed. My grandmother had it with us, but my cousin lives 2 hours away and never got that with her. Makes a difference being close by.

lol I get the whole grandkids question every once in a while. I think I first need a non crazy girlfriend haha now I just say I'll get another four legged grandkid for her.

Oh, how wonderful! How precious. He is beautiful. I can only imagine how amazing it is to be a grandparent. I don't know if that will ever happen for me. I have never pressured my two daughters about that nor will I ever. They will plan their lives the way they want and in whatever way it brings them happiness. If that includes children, that's great. And if it doesn't, that okay, too.

Nothing like a praying grandma! What a ministry we have. Fortunately for me, my daughter & her husband think that's a great gift too! Your grandson is a cutie. I can just see you cooing and holding him!

Ahhhh Grand parents are so SILLY LOL! There re not many feelings in this life like holding the grands. Some of us understand EXACTLY how you feel. I am watching my son and his first grand. I tell him, "Now you know how I felt with your first son!!!" (and I was crazy about the kid. STILL AM and he is 30+)
Enjoy these times, YEP, they are wonderful!
Loved the entry...

Aw! I love it! My littlest little is just over a year and I kinda laugh at myself. The next youngest is almost 10. Why did we do this to ourselves? Yet this time is the sweetest time around. There is nothing like a little baby and their innocence. Enjoy being a grandmother!

Your grandson is adorable! Although I'm not one, I know from my mom, that being a grandparent is a wonderful gift. I'm so happy for you. :)

How lovely that you get to spend time with him weekly.

One of the fairly regulars at the farmers market I go to frequently has her grandson in tow. She watches him pretty regularly, and the farmers market is a nice outing for him in his stroller. They have a good time together.

I am so happy for you and your family. He looks cute as a button as they say. My mom didn't want to be a grandmother or Oma but when my niece came into this world, my mom's smile said it all. She loved being Oma and now, today in fact, my niece turned 21 and my mom does not know that it is her grand daughter's birthday. My mom loves her so much but has forgotten these days that she held so precious so enjoy each and every moment.

That is the sweetest! How blessed he is to have a loving, praying grandma! I am still waiting for grandchildren, but am very careful about making a big deal about it in front of my kids. I actually don't talk about it much. There isn't much to say, really. I will trust and believe that when the time is right, I will be able to enjoy a grandchild or two.. or three ;)
Your little grandchild is growing so quickly!

What a sweetie! I am so glad that you guys moved closer to him. It is important for them to get to know their grandparents. I wish I had had a good grandparent in my life. I feel like I missed out on so much because there just wasn't a grandma figure there for me!! And I love that you are already talking to him about Jesus!!

Beautiful grandchild, Betty. I'm glad things worked out so you could be there to watch him grow up. I think it's wonderful too that you didn't pressure your son for a grandchild. I think that is wrong of people to do, but I know a lot of them do it.

My sister will be a grandmother for the first time in about two-three weeks. She's so excited. Her daughter is 29 and she never pressured her either. The time does arrive sooner or later.

I'm so happy for your bonding experience with your precious grandson. I agree that it is important to live close by. You know I am one of those people waiting to be a grandmother but I've never put any pressure on our children. It is their lives and their choice. I know that we would get asked all the time after we were married. We waited 7 years before we had our first. I have to share that Adam was being picked up to go to a lunch with his best friend, along with his wife and their 2 year old daughter. Adam knows my heart and they brought their daughter in to meet me. At first she cried with my excitement to see her but then she was touring the house with me holding my hand. She was adorable!!!

That is nice you get to see him so often. I am not any hurry to be a grandma and I don't know if I will. My mil says she is too young to be a great grandmother.

He is a precious little one :) I'm glad that you get to spend some time to bond with him and pray for him. Children definitely need as much prayer as we can give them, especially with the direction this world is heading in. I pray for my future children, if I ever have any, and that I will raise them to know and love God.

I didn't think that I would have grandchildren either ... and when they did come, I thought I wouldn't be able to see them much. But I received a special blessing in that I get to see them about 4 times a week. And my intent is tell them about Jesus all that I can, too!

Enjoy!

He's so cute!

It's so great that you're able to spend time with him and bond with him like that. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was really little. I don't really remember a lot of it, but I was always really close to them. Maybe it came from that early time with them.

How precious, Betty! I am so glad you are getting to be there with him, watching him grow up, and even helping a little in molding him into the man he will be.

I think it is vitally important to pray over these little ones...you are doing exactly the right thing there!
