Grand Canyon

A/Z Theme - Sights and Sites of Arizona

G - Grand Canyon

Not much to say about this; the saying is true "a picture is worth a thousand words."

A trail you can walk down.

One of the many different tours you can take while there. You can take donkeys down to the bottom and you can go white water rafting at the bottom through the Colorado River.  We have done neither in the times we have visited the Grand Canyon over the years.

Have you been to the Grand Canyon?

Never been there. But it looks spectacular. Natures finest picture. My aunt and uncle went there on the donkeys. Sounds scary to me.

Yes I have been and it was breath-taking! We wanted to do the donkey ride, but apparently you have to book nearly a year in advance! My friends and I have discussed hiking down if we ever go again.

I have not been there but everyone I know who has, speaks very highly of it

No. I haven't been and I feel kind of un American about it. It just seems like the Grand Canyon is one of those places that every family, every person should see. I often wonder why we travel back to the same vacation spot year after year. We go to the beach all the time. I know one of the reasons is because we save on money by staying at my mom's condo in Florida, but I really need to start making an effort to show my kids more of the world. My grandparents showed me so much of it when I was young and I feel like I'm failing in that regard. The photos are breathtaking. I do believe I would want to do the donkey excursion. Do you really have to book it a year in advance?

I would love to visit the Grand Canyon - it's one of the worlds wonders that needs to be experienced :). I would probably take the donkey ride because it looks like a long way to walk.

Never been and doubt that I will ever get there now but it is just stunning.

Jo said...

Nope never been and I too doubt I will ever get there now. I am told the donkey trip is pretty terrifying. Haven ridden a donkey in Yugoslavia (as it was then) who decided to check the grazing on the cliff edge, I can see why. White water rafting would scare me to death too. Beautiful place though.

Pictures can't do it justice, can it? I'd like to go back again someday.

Very few words are needed for this! The Grand Canyon speaks for itself. I've never visited but I hope to one day. It is an experience I know I'll never forget!

Ah! The big "G"!

I've only flown over it - it is quite visible even at 35,000 feet up!

beyond spectacular. I'd like to go back and out on their new deck. It was being built last time we went. Grand, indeed

Sure lives up the the grand in its name. Never even been anywhere near it at my sea.

I was close once. My sister and I took a trip years ago and we drove through several states and stopped and visited some friends. The plan was to stop there, but we'd been gone so long and just wanted to go home. Said poop on it and did just that.

Stephen Tremp said...

It's something we need to do since we're so close. That and the Petrified Forest too,

Even more than a thousand words! I have never been there and after I saw these pictures I really want to. There are some people who say - why do I need to go anywhere if I can see them on the net/tv... I'm not of them. There's a lot more to a place than just seeing it.

It's been a while, but I never tire of watching people's faces when they see the Canyon for the first time. Makes me proud to be an Arizona-ian. (Yes, I think I just made up that word.)

I visited for the first time at age 13, when I fell in love with the West. We've taken our kids twice since then. Never gets old!

I visited when I was a kid but I'd like to go back as an adult so I could appreciate it more.

We were there last year, Betty, for the first time. Simply amazing - photos can't do it justice; everyone should go at least once. It's one of the 7 Wonders of the World for a reason...

I think I recognise that view of the Bright Angel Trail. It was lovely to hike down and up - although I was far too hot on the way down, stayed an extra day to relax, then came up at dawn - now THAT was spectacular!
That was in 1976. Time flies :)

I've not been to the Grand Canyon. Every time I see pictures I feel a bit wistful about that fact.

Ok, now you really make me want to see the Grand Canyon. Those pictures are stunning! I went white water rafting in Australia and in New Zealand and it was so much fun! I'm not sure if I'd do it now at my age, but I loved it in my twenties.

Yes, I've been once, about 15 years ago. It made a very big, no pun intended, impression on me. I realized, as I stood there on the edge of that giant crevice, exactly how small I was and how big the world was.

Beautiful pictures! Have a good one!

I have seen the Grand Canyon from an airplane. Twice

I made two trips to Arizona before finally going to the Grand Canyon. I always said it was just a big hole in the ground. NOT. It was incredible. The best part was springing for the helicopter ride over the canyon. It was mind-boggling.

Janet Miles said...

The Grand Canyon is on my list of places to stop when we start our country road trip (when we retire).

Sunni said...

Betty,

You're absolutely right on this one. A picture is worth a million words! I've been there a few times, but never took the trail to the bottom. I guess I better add that to my bucket list. It would be a totally different view seeing it from the bottom.

Finally, I can say "YES" to your question. I was really surprised to see other not-so-grand canyons though. It never occurred to me that canyons were so common. I guess people didn't go out at night much in the early days of westward expansion for fear of discovering a canyon the hard way.

Wonderful views, would like to visit there someday. Greetings to you and nice weekend!

I haven't been to the Grand Canyon and can't see myself getting there. It's a long way from Australia and I still haven't been to the Great Barrier Reef or Uluru. So many amazing places to see in this planet and only one life time. I have the same lament with books! xx Rowena

I was there in 1976 albeit briefly, but enough time to soak in it's magnificence.

Arizona is one of the few states I've visited and I had to go to the Grand Canyon. We visited the north rim and walked down a trail for a little while until the heat became too much (I'm from chilly England). The best moment was watching the sun set on one side and the full moon rise on the other, exactly opposite. We, several people from many countries, watched in silent awe. Thank you for bringing back the memories
