A Father's Day Surprise

Thanks to all who played along to guess which number was the lie on my True or False post.  #7 was the lie (making an offer on a house in Phoenix).  We did not make an offer on a house in Phoenix (and really I got to give credit to those people who live there because that heat was oppressive; I don't think I have it in me to live in such extreme heat for the amount of months they do, even though I'm sure they somewhat get used to it; heck we lived in extreme cold in Montana for four months a year and did get used to it).

So all others were the truth, including the delightful news that hubby and me are going to be grandparents.  Totally caught us by surprise.

Saturday after we had lunch with a friend and had done some wine tasting, of which I picked up a bottle of wine for son's girlfriend, since she likes wine, we went over to son's/girlfriend's apartment and visited.  Whenever we visit, I always bring something they might need, a gift card for the local grocery store, paper goods, etc.  This time we brought toilet paper, paper towels, and trash bags.  I laughed and gave the girlfriend the wine and said she got the better deal and gave son the paper products.  We had a nice visit and then made arrangements to get together for breakfast the next day since both son and girlfriend had to work later in the morning on Sunday.

The next morning, Father's Day, we were together at the restaurant, having ordered breakfast and had gotten our food.  Halfway through the meal, I picked up my water glass and offered a toast to hubby saying "Happy Father's Day."  Everyone did the same.  Then son said "next year you won't be the only father at the table."  Hubby and me just kind of looked at him, took a few minutes to register what he was saying.  I looked at girlfriend who was across the table from me and she kind of shook her head "yes" and then I got it.  Got tears in my eyes (happy tears) and then got up and went around and hugged her and then hugged son.  I guess the look on my face was priceless, they were saying they wished they had video taped it, LOL.

After it kind of quieted down with all the excitement after such an announcement, I said "oh no, I brought you wine yesterday."  Of course she wasn't planning to drink it until afterwards.  I'm glad the bottle we picked for her the guy at the wine tasting said it would mature in time and actually taste better.

So a new member of the family.  Totally unexpected but definitely will be loved.

It is interesting how God works.  A year ago son hadn't even met girlfriend yet (they met last August) but I remember one day last year thinking "I'm going to be the mother of a groom."  He wasn't even dating at the time.  Eventually after they met, they decided to move to this state and then 2 months later we follow.  We'll be about two hours away, but closer than five hours away if we were still in the San Diego area.

Now I just have to figure out what I want to be called........Granny, Grandma, Nana, etc.  Got some time I guess to figure it out.

Betty,

Congratulations to your son and his girlfriend and to you too! Your family is growing. How wonderful! I'm glad that number 6 on your list was true and not a lie. Your new name will be a big decision. I have no idea what I'd like to be called when I become a grandparent so I don't have any suggestions I can share. I hope you work it out!

GREAT news about the baby. Wonderful, in fact. It will change your life. I wanted my granddaughter to call me grammy but she decided I was grandma terre. So.... who can argue with that? I guessed right about the house. When the right one, in the right place, comes along, you'll know.

Congratulations, it's fantastic news ... and such a lovely way to announce it to you both.

Congrats on becoming grandparents. I figured that one was true as it would be a pretty big announcement to family and friends to be false.

I'm a little confused on the Phoenix thing, as I didn't realize there was a true or false to it. So, if you didn't make an offer, where then are you moving to? Congrats, folks really enjoy being grandmothers I hear...I always laugh and say I must be younger as I'm not a grandmother, probably never will be as daughter is very single. What fun to have that to look forward to, to plan, to organize etc.

Having a grandbaby is the best!! Congrats! For me, no matter how much I considered what I might want to be called, when I held Hazil Ruth and talked to her "MawMaw" just started coming out of my mouth.

A new baby, how pink and wonderful. My mother would have arrived with paper towels and toilet paper, too.

No doubt about it, your grandchild will be loved! Sounds like you sensed girlfriend would be "the one." I had been wondering if announcement would be engagement or expecting. Grandparents thinking of a newer car or regulars at the car rental, putting on tons of miles visiting your grandbaby. (:

Patience, and yes, it is interesting how God works. Just look where you are and all you've been through.

Awesome news indeed. I'd skip Granny if I was you, can go along with fanny a bit too easy lol

Congrats! You will love being a grandmother. I highly recommend it.

I decided to be a MiMi, although I have to admit, when I get excited sometimes I slip and refer to myself as grandma.

Aww. Just reading it made me teary eyed. How sweet! What a lovely surprise! Congratulations!!!!
I should have known it wasn't putting an offer on the house when you said you were thankful to be back where the heat wasn't so oppressive.

Congratulations, and you don't even look like a GRANDMA!!!
What news on Father's Day and a neat way to spring it.

Yeah, about the heat....

I love the paper products you came with:) What happy news and see what a difference a year makes. This is wonderful news. Now as for the name...of course I am partial to Oma but that is German-lol. I have a feeling once you see the baby you will love being called Grandmom or nannie

I am so excited for you and your family, Betty! Having grandkids is the best. Mine called me granny! My son says it makes me sound so old but I love being called granny. They all called Richard Papa!

Congrats. My mother and my sister-in-law's mother had a similar conundrum when niece was expected. It was kind of interesting how they came up with their monikers.

Congratulations! Baby will call you what he/she wants to call you. My Mom wanted to be Grammy but he chose Nanny.

YAY -- good news! Pick a cute grandmother name.

Congrats again!

PS I love that you brought them paper products. Too often people give silly gifts that end up gathering dust.

How I wish someone had brought me a few rolls of toilet paper and trash bags when we first started out. :)

Thank you, dear Betty, for taking the time to share this beautiful story with us. Now I have tearful eyes. You will make an awesome grandmother. When Sookie was born, our first grandchild, I remember my sister asking me what I would like her to call me and I thought about it...my sis said, "You do know they are going to call you what they want anyway, don't you?" I didn't know it but sure enough, Sookie was almost 2 and couldn't say "grammy" as I spoke it to her. It came out "groggy" and so it stayed. I'm fine with it. I think it's funny!

Congratulations! Sounds you and your family had a great weekend, besides the heat. Although, I must say that I found Phoenix area dry heat more tolerable than the stuffy, humid heat here in Oklahoma.

Congrats on the news. And to be fair, I didn't read this post until after I voted with my answer to your true or false quiz. I didn't think you'd ever move to Phoenix. The desert is HOT! I've lived here for almost eleven years! I don't think you ever get used to it, but it's still better than the alternative - extreme cold. Nothing can beat San Diego weather.

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! I'm thinking this is your first? I am so excited for you! When my first granddaughter was born (8 years ago) it was one of the happiest days of my life. My life changed for the good... and I had purpose once again. Spoiling my grand! Gary and I went through the same thing... what shall we call ourselves? We settled for Grammy and PopPop. Then came more and now, with four it is all about making sure noone feels left out. Once again... Congratulations Gram!

Congratulations!

There are so many name options for grandparents; my sister and I were fortunate enough to have a lot of them when we were young due to my mom's parents being divorced/re-married, and the fact that my dad's grandparents were still living. The most unique names were my dad's parents': Mamakitty and Daddydog (though it was Daddyduck for our younger cousin). Every set had a unique name so there was never any confusion for us.

Have fun choosing your name! :-)

Oh Betty, how wonderful!! My congrats couldn't be more heartfelt - and please pass on to your son and his girlfriend that thoughts and prayers will be with them!

Keep us posted.

And good luck with the name!!

GOD BLESS!

I am way behind on your blog, Betty! Congratulations on the soon to be new grandbaby, the now soon to be Daughter In Law!!! My mom is Mamaw, my mother in law was/is (she passed away in October of last year) Nana. I would like to be called Oma (German for Grandma) in the far off future!! I know a lot of times though, the grandchild is the one who names you, that's what happened with my parents....they were Grandma and Grandpa until Jordyn started talking and then they became Mamaw and Papaw!

God's Blessings
