What a difference 12 hours make

Bird feeder 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 6th

Bird feeder 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6th

It amazes me that the birds eat that much seed a day.  This has been going on for the past week that they almost eat the whole thing.

We surely have a lot of birds that come through or the same birds come back again and again.

Yesterday was cute, the birds were feeding on both feeders plus some birds were eating the seed that were on the patio under the feeders.  Doves were down there along with quail.  We even had a bunny eating the seed.  The quail walked right by the bunny and the bunny didn't even move.

I wish I could watch all day the interactions at the feeders. I can see from my work place but have to also look at the computer screen (LOL).  They are fascinating.

And hungry...........

I have got to put up a feeder.

That's some huge bird feeders. The birds can eat a entire feeder full in a day at my place. I don't fill them full daily anymore because there's lots to eat in the desert this time of year and they'll eat us out of house and home. I know a guy here who goes through four 40-pound bags of bird seed every week.

I ration the food now but always have pans of water all over the place. What I like to see in nature is how well all the species can coexist with no squabbles. I think man needs to take a lesson from the critters.

That must cost you a fortune! I'm still trying to choose a feeder for my garden. I want to place it where I can photograph the birds from the house.

Thanks for visiting my blog, and for all your lovely comments.

Birdwatching is indeed fun. ENJOY.

Wonder if, considering the time of year, hungry babies are being fed as well? We've been looking at bird feeders, but it sounds as though we'll need to ration!

I always sprinkle some on the ground for the doves as they won't eat from a feeder. Of course my chickens have learned that too and it is a race to see who gets the most.

I love feeding my birds too.

Once those birds find out where the food is, they will keep coming back. We have lots of them here too and they are amazing to watch. I've never had a rabbit visit here, but we do have squirrels that love to eat the bird seed. It's wonderful that you have a window to look out while you are working. Enjoy !

My computer desk sits right in front of a window that looks out back. I can see squirrels racing up and down the pecan tree. Watch birds that land on the line that runs to the water well. See Bug's beautiful Prissy horse run, cut up and play with the dogs. About 10 days ago I caught movement out of the corner of my eye and spied a beige/chocolate fox running across the back!

If I saw that here, I'd know a squirrel got into the feeder! That's crazy!

If I'm home and I get up early enough, I get to see a lot of birds gathering outside my bedroom window. We have robins, bluejays, and my personal favorites: cardinals. I love the variations of the colors between males and females.

If you add some peanuts to the seed mix, perhaps a certain computer operator would join the eating animals? Goodness - you've a hungry crowd!

We used to have feeders out in our back yard in NC. Spent hours watching them. Squirrels used to come and eat the fallen seed, never saw a rabbit, maybe a quail at night, never saw them in daylight.

Flying pigs. I love them with all my heart. Feed them too. They're feeding babies right now.

Pat Hatt said...

Wow, they sure are hungry. They must spread the word and all come to your place to chow down

jack69 said...

OH, you must feed all the birds in town. WOW.
I just put a feeder out a week or so ago, we only have two so far, the ones who nest in our carport.

We have two bird feeders at our new house and my husband said there's bird seed in the garage. I need to fill them up!

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

That is a lot of seed for one day. We stopped doing bird feeds because it attracts so many chipmunks and they dig holes all over our yard.

Wow. That's a lot of seed to go through so quickly. Yep, lots of birds. You need to set up a webcam...

It flat astounds me how much the birds eat. I have two feeders out for seed and two for hummingbirds.

That's amazing on the seed - WOW! I keep meaning to put up one of those little nectar feeders. We have little hummingbirds that come to the window sometimes. I can almost hear them say, "C'mon, Sharon. When are you going to help us out?!"

But we do enjoy watching the deer come to our water trough and salt lick. Some of them are looking pregnant, so we'll probably have some babies in another month or two. That is always such a treat!!

We have one right outside of our bedroom window that we watch. Wow, yours emptied out really fast. They must be some hungry birds. Don't you just love watching them though? Hope your having a great week.

Chatty Crone said...

Hey girl - you better be careful - you will be watching them full time and your job will go kaput! Just kidding they are so much fun to watch.

They are having a feast at your place! You are a favourite house, for sure.

I have that exact feeder in my yard. The seed lasts about 3 weeks. I have another feeder that I filled one morning. By the next morning all of the seed was gone. I filled it again and at back watched as the chipmunk climbed up and parked himself there.

I fill mine every couple of days. They are hungry for sure. I love the birds. Richard and I used to watch for hours. Squirrels too! And yesterday the Orioles returned to the jelly feeders. They and the hummers are my favoorite

Oh my, that's a big difference! It takes a village to each the rest of the seeds on the ground.

Have a Happy Mother's Day.

Oh my goodness-so funny because the same thing happens here:) We have squirrels that visit at the bottom since the little birds are so messy. If someone tells me I eat like a bird I now know to be insulted because they are messy and can eat tons!:)

What a feel-good post, Betty! I was on the verge of a 'blue' mood earlier, and this just lifted me up.

Wouldn't it be great if all people could dine together in peace like your wee friends?

I love my bird feeders! It is so fun to watch the different birds that stop by. I can watch them for hours! Loved seeing your pictures. :)

Wow that is alot of bird seed for only 12m hours. We used to have feeders in our trees, but never had that much response, but we have so much in the yard, as do our neighbors that they eat, the seed must be a 2nd choice. We ended up taking them down. But, I do remember how fun they were to watch. Particularly the cute bright yellow Goldfinches that ate up side down.

I'm no bird expert, but it is fun to watch them and observe their funny little habits. We like to layer different kinds of seed in the feeder. The birds will move to another perch to get whichever seed they want. We call the doves "the fat girls" because they walk around on the ground getting whatever the little birds kick out of the feeder.

Maria Zannini said...

Wow! That is a lot. I stopped putting feed in my feeder by spring. No one shows up once everything greens up. But come winter, look out. They're like airplanes waiting for their turn to land on one of the stoops.

Veronica Lee said...

Looks like they are really hungry!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at Betty's Diner! Fun to watch indeed. Squirrels eat half at my mom's bird feeder.

Saleslady371 said...

I wondered how you get anything done with such active feeders! Love it.

blogoratti said...

Well that's amazing that that they ate that much!

Nick Wilford said...

Those are some hungry birds. Your place is obviously their top eaterie in the neighbourhood.

Ruth said...

Wow! We get a lot of sparrows and they will eat and eat until the food is gone. But, we don't get many finches at the finch feeder and that food lasts forever. Moisture has gotten in it and food went bad before. You need to buy stock in bird feed.

Wonderful. I get awakened by the birds every morning. I love their songs. Now you have me thinking about putting up a bird feeder.

I have hummingbird feeders outside my kitchen window. They usually arrive around Mother's Day. It will be fun to see how much your birds eat throughout the summer!!

I just got a bird feeder and filled it to the top and the next day it was empty, but I think squirrels got to it. Grr!

My parents have a bird feeder and I swear, one of us has to fill it every single day!

Kat said...

Yes! Birds are little hogs! I can't believe how much bird seed I go through. Although, I make sure the birds clean up underneath the bird feeder before I fill up the feeder again. My mom even asked for bird seed for Christmas because she goes through so much. Isn't that hilarious?

Watching birds always makes me happy. No matter what kind of mood I'm in if I see birds splashing in the bird bath I have to smile. :)

It always amazes me how quickly the birds go through the food in our feeder as well. We had to move it the the front yard this year because our lab puppy is a dog now and he tries to kill the birds and I can't stand it. I know he is just doing what comes natural to him, but I get too upset when he actually gets one. I enjoyed meeting you during the A to Z challenge and just dropped by to say hello now that it is over

Squirrels love birdseed, too, and yes, they eat it up in a hurry. We have to put feed in our feeders every day! Like you, I could probably watch them all day.
