virus

Not the stomach flu or a respiratory sickness, but my computer is sick.  I'm typing on son's laptop for this post.

Not sure what happened, but my desktop computer was perfectly fine this morning, but when I went to check my email at lunchtime, I had this message across my screen that my computer had been sieged by the United States because of illegal operations which could include pornography (NEVER), copyright violations (don't try to, but who knows if I accidentally did it) or use of an illegal software program (???). My computer is locked, I can't access it because despite turning it off, doing this, doing that, etc., when I turn it back on and it loads up, I get that message.

The cure.  I have to send $300 through money pack to their site within 48 hours and if I don't, I could face criminal charges.  Yeah, right, like I'm going to do that.

So in the meantime, we're trying to figure out how to restore my computer if it is even possible. Granted, our virus protection software had expired a few months ago and we hadn't gotten around to renew it, but we've been late before and never got a virus.  I am blaming Google Chrome.  I use it when I play Word Tornado "my name is Betty and I'm a Word Tornado-oholic".  But its been acting weird lately so I wonder if I got the virus from it.

Anyway, I can obviously use my son's or hubby's laptops when they aren't around using them and we can all share, but I had a lot of the journals I read in my favorites and I can't access my favorites on their computers.  So I'm requesting to please leave a comment on this post, even if it is just "hi" so that I can then access your blogs through it, especially if I'm a frequent commenter on your blog.

And if you don't hear from me for a bit, its because we are trying to sort this all out.

I guess I should be lucky, we've been on the Internet for years and this is the first virus gotten.

Its such a pain though.

And I think I've lost all my pictures I've taken that I downloaded to that computer since I never backed them up to anything.  Valuable lesson learned.

At least I didn't get a traffic ticket today.

Oh my goodness I feel for you. I have had my computer shut down with a virus and ended up having to get a new one. I hope you can get to the bottom of the problem asap.

Oh dear! I'd recommend a trip to a computer doctor, I have one named Dr Bob and he helped me with a virus, then I got a couple of anti virus programs and run both of them on a regular basis. It isn't cheap, but a good computer doctor will wipe out the virus, it's probably a trojan of some sort, they're the worst I've heard. I'll be running my virus fighters tonight for sure.

I use Google Chrome, and I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials virus protection for several years now. It's FREE. No problems. Hope you get it fixed soon. Michelle

Your virus, Target's hackers, what's wrong with these people! At least you're not freezing cold. (: Take care.

OH no, A virus like that one is terrible. Hope you haven't lost everything. I know I'd be lost without mine. My children got me a back up hard drive for Christmas. I feel a little safer now that things are backed up just in case.

Holy moly. I had the black screen of death one time; thought I was loading a manual for my car, but I was on some punk rock site.
The computer went to the hospital for three days. I read a lot of books.
Good luck sorting out your computer.

Ugh. I hate viruses and spam. If only their genius was expended on betterment of human kind... imagine what the world would be like?

What a pain. I just heard yesterday about a virus/scam like this where they said you had to send money to restore everything. I hope you get it all sorted out soon and without too much cost.

I'm with Intense Guy. These folks could be a benefit instead of a pain if they had the right mind set. sorry about the problems. Now my small one here doesn't seem so bad. The best in fixing the thing!

This is a common virus. If you google 'remove DOJ virus' you can get step by step procedures to remove it. Good luck!

That is very strange, I'm so sorry. I'm on Google Chrome all the time from the time I turn my computer on until the time I turn it off at the end of the day. I do however have Norton 360. I also send all my pictures to Shutterfly. Hopefully it can be fixed and you haven't lot anything.

Ugh! There are people out there who I wish would suffer a horrible fate. We have had to change 3 of our credit/debit cards within a weeks time (my husbands happened twice on one card and once it was the Target fiasco, we have had emails like crazy telling us we won money or are breaking the law, phone calls at work saying we are tax evaders and under fbi surveillance (untrue, I assure you)and today I had an email that said I had to appear in court or be arrested (jury duty mails out your papers) and i accidentally opened this one (Randy blocked it)
It seems like there are more and more bad people and awful stories.
I hope your matter is resolved soon (we use Norton anivirus and it catches a lot of bad stuff!)

Ugg those viruses are a pain in the rump to get rid of. Had one the other month. Google chrome is probably the cause.

First...I am so sorry!! Hopefully, someone will be able to salvage your hard drive. I once lost all my stuff, photos and all, so I know how you feel. Those virus making people are despicable!!!

AVG has a free virus software, and it's pretty good. I have that on my phone (if you don't have anything on your new phone, you should do that asap)

I am NO fan of Google, in any way! But I do kinda doubt that the virus was caused by Chrome, or by the game. Viruses are tricky and sneaky, and folks who write them should be jailed a good long time.

No traffic ticket? Were you speeding? lolz

Oh...did anyone try to turn on your computer in safe mode? If so, you should be able to run a virus stomper that way.

What a mess! Hoping that you are soon *up and running* and that all will be WELL!

I don't know which kind of virus is worse. But doesn't your job depend on your computer? I have to say I don't play games on the computer - I do play solitaire on the phone! Good luck. That is just terrible. Sandie

Hi Betty! Hope it gets sorted out soon..so frustrating! I am going to get my son to check that my back up is still working.. thanks for the reminder! Also, you might want to use Dropbox for your pics.. you can access them from anywhere, then.

I think everything you mentioned sounds like part of the virus. There are really good totally free antivirus programs out there. Spybot, AVG Free, Bit Defender, etc. Filehippo.com is a great place to find safe, fast downloads for them. Many will work in SafeMode and can clean out things there they can't in the regular Windows. We got a trojan the first year we were online that had me never knowing when we were looking at something from the real AOL and when we weren't. Best of luck. Hope you have this resolved in time to participate in the A-Z!

Hmm....I read about something like this on scambusters.com Did you click on any links to sites that you do not know about, from someone that you do not know? It's a scammer not the U.S. government! He just wants to steal your identity! I hope you get your computer problem solved!
: )

Oh my gosh! Is it all just a hacker, or is it really the government? That's pretty scary.

oh gosh Betty! This is not good. Hey, Gary came to me the other day and told me that there was someone calling him with an urgent message that all of our computers were going to crash! This guy needed to get access so he could come into our computers and stop it. Gary got about 8 urgent messages, the first one from overseas. Then he finally got one from NJ and they said they were with Microsoft and all of our computers were going to crash... he needed to act immediately and let him into our computers. Ugh!!! Gary is so gullible. He was just about ready and I'm like.. WHAT! No way!! This is a scam to steal all your stuff. So I googled it and I was right. My point I guess is... why are there so many evil people out there trying to destroy others with identity theft and computer virus... But then again, I guess it's life, right? I hope yours is fixed and ready to go soon!

That's horrible! I really hope you can get everything back, especially your pictures. That would be so horrible to lose all of your pictures. Good luck!

Ouch. That sounds like one of those ransomware viruses:

I'm so sorry to hear this Betty. I had a similar experience last year. After trying to fix it myself, I finally took it in to a computer repair place I had never used before. Fortunately I lucked into a reputable repairman and he was able to fix what turned out to be a really nasty virus. It had even taken out my contacts, but he somehow got it back. I hope you are as lucky as I was!

Ouch! I sure hope you can fix your computer and save your photos.

Oh my goodness! That is so crazy! I am so sorry. What a pain.
I hope you are able to recover your computer and most importantly your pictures!!!!

I went through the same thing with my computer last summer. Had a friend try to fix it, but it came back. Then I took the hard drive to Best Buy and had most of my stuff put on a Mac Mini which I love. I bought a warranty for the Mac Mini. I use the PC speakers, keyboard and mouse same printer. The screen I had to change. That other computer does not go on the Internet now, but I do go back there and transfer things on a flash drive to the Apple mini. When I am totally ready to say goodbye to the files and pictures there, then it will be stripped and used by my husband's volunteer caregiver when he is here.

You suspect your tornado program. I suspected Pinterest. I have learned to not open email if I do not know the person.

Hugs,
Carol

Ugh. My worry has always been my photos and losing them if my computer crashes. I have been saying for years that I need to move them to and external drive. This post may be my motivation! Good luck with getting your computer up and running and hopefully you did not lose all of your photos. You always know how to look on the bright side!
